The table is the glue that holds websites together. Tables are very complex in that you may have tables nested with-in tables nested with-in tables... This website, your website, The Jacksonville Market Place, and any complex website you visit are built from nested tables at their core.

Tables are built with opening and closing tags for each component of the table. There is a hierarchy that must be observed. Failure to carefully observe table hierarchy results in page failure and can be a challenge to find.

The table opening and closing tags:

Code:
<table>
</table>

Within tables are rows and cells each with its own opening and closing tags. A basic one row one cell table would look like this:

Table Example 1

Quote:

<table>
<tr>
<td>
Some content to display here
<td>
</tr>
</table>

A table can contain many rows and each row can contain many cells. All rows in a given table must contain the same number of cells. A table with two rows of two cells each would look like this:

http://www.jlajax.com/tutorials/TableExample.html#TableTwo
Table Example 2

Quote:
<table> <== Table opening tag
<tr> <== row one opening tag
<td> <== cell one row one opening tag
Some content to display here
</td> <== cell one row one closing tag
<td> <== cell two row one opening tag
Some content to display here
</td> <== cell two row one closing tag
</tr> <== row one closing tag
<tr> <== row two opening tag
<td> <== row two cell one opening tag
Some content to display here
</td> <== row two cell one closing tag
<td> <== row two cell two opening tag
Some content to display here
</td> <== row two cell two closing tag
</tr> <== row two closing tag
</table> <== table closing tag

A table can be modified to display information in different ways by using the colspan and rowspan attributes. An attribute is a method of controlling some aspect of display.

Table Example Three

Quote:
<table width="100%" border="5" cellspacing="2" cellpadding="0">
<tr>
<td rowspan="2" colspan="2">Some content to display here</td>
<td>Some content to display here</td>
<td>Some content to display here</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td rowspan="3" colspan="2">Some content to display here</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Some content to display here</td>
<td>Some content to display here</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Some content to display here</td>
<td>Some content to display here</td>
</tr>
</table>
